Holiday Highlight: Juneteenth

This coming Monday, June 20, we will be closed in observance of Juneteenth, which is celebrated this Sunday. Juneteenth is an important holiday representing a key moment in African-American history: the official end to slavery in all 50 US States. While the Emancipation Proclamation was passed on January 1, 1863, declaring all slaves to be free, slaves in states under Confederate control remained enslaved. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865 when Union troops arrived in Texas, the final state where slavery was still being enacted, when troops read the Emancipation Proclamation and declared slavery to be over in all 50 states. Juneteenth is a monumental day for freedom, and is also known as America’s Second Independence Day or Freedom Day. As such, we will be closed Monday to observe the significance of this day, and we encourage you all to keep an eye out for events in our Nashville community this weekend celebrating Juneteenth and the fight against racial injustice!
